How to Tell You Have Rats
Norway rats are the rat most often reported along the Front Range. They stay close to food sources like trash, compost, bird feeders and pet food.
Much larger than a mouse, with a blunt nose, small ears, coarse brown fur, and a tail shorter than the body.
Capsule shaped droppings about half an inch long, greasy rub marks along walls, gnawed wood or drywall, and burrows along foundations.
Rats are active year round. Activity near homes often becomes more noticeable in fall and winter.
Burrows under slabs, sheds and decks, gaps under garage doors, and openings around utility lines and crawl space vents.

Where Norway Rats Turn Up Around Colorado Springs
The rat we deal with here is the Norway rat. It burrows in soil along foundations, under sheds, slabs and woodpiles, and it likes to live near water and steady food. Properties near creeks and drainages, such as along Fountain Creek and Monument Creek, can see more pressure.
Chicken coops, compost bins, pet food stored in garages and spilled bird seed are the food sources we find most often. Removing them is part of the fix, because trapping alone does not hold if food stays easy to reach.
Rats leave signs that are hard to miss once you know them: fresh burrow holes about the size of a fist, smooth runways along walls and fences, gnawing on doors and bins, and droppings larger than a mouse's.

Rat programs use secured bait stations selected for the property and activity. Preventative Pest Control does not offer snap-trap or glue-board programs.
Is exclusion included automatically?
No. Exclusion is scope-dependent and must be separately reviewed and clearly listed in the approved work.

How do I tell rat droppings from mouse droppings?
Rat droppings are larger, about half an inch or more, and capsule shaped. Mouse droppings are closer to the size of a grain of rice.
Why do rats burrow next to my foundation?
Soil along foundations, under slabs and beneath sheds gives rats shelter close to food and water.
Do bird feeders attract rats?
Yes. Spilled seed is one of the most common food sources that brings rats into a yard.

When the schedule allows, yes. If a rat is inside the living area now, close off the room and call early in the day.
Do rats in Colorado Springs live in the walls?
Norway rats mostly nest in burrows outside and travel inside for food. When they do get in, they use gaps around pipes, garage doors and crawl space vents. Finding those entry points is part of the inspection.
Should I use poison bait myself?
